There Are No Guarantees
When we get into this work, we want to believe there are guarantees. We want to know that our efforts will be worth it. That if we work hard, do good, post well — that eventually, we will see results. We’ll gain the followers. We'll win the business. We'll get to wherever it is we're trying to go.
I once confided in a friend about my lack of growth on social media. I had been going through this "dry spell," if you will, where nothing was performing well. My engagement was down, and I was comparing myself to my peers, and honestly, to a past version of myself who seemed to get results so easily.
I remember so vividly what she told me. She said, "No matter how hard you try, Anna, you can't MAKE this happen. Nobody can.” In essence, it's out of our hands. We can put in the work, the reps — you can post your little heart out, take all the classes, work with a coach — and still, the growth may never come. There are no guarantees.
Her words should have made me feel powerless in that moment. But they didn't. Instead, I felt this sense of relief. Because in a way, it felt like the universe signaling to me: do what you can, and then let go. Stop forcing things so much. Stop trying to solve for your whole life in a single Instagram post.
At the same time, what feels like a relief can also feel like a letdown. Because if you really do put in all of this work, and nothing comes of it, how will that feel? Will your efforts be wasted? If I put all my might into something — and the thing I want doesn’t come, what then? What am I supposed to make of that?
I try to remember that no effort is ever wasted. This work changes you, regardless of outcome. Every post is a rep of clarifying what you think, what you believe, who you are. Posting on the internet is a spiritual practice in and of itself. And a spiritual practice isn't about the result. You don't meditate to win. You do it because the act of showing up consistently is the transformation itself. Even if the results never come. Even if you never reach this far-away distant place where all your dreams are fully realized.
So what do you actually do with that? Here are three things I try to keep in mind.
1. Force isn't the same as effort.
It feels like agitated energy, like trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. It's creating from a place of desperation, and people can feel that in your work. Effort, on the other hand, is intentional. You can work hard, show up consistently, and put real time into this — and still do so with ease. This is what opens doors.
Notice when you're creating from inspiration vs. anxiety. They feel different in your body.
If you're posting just to post, or just to “please the algorithm," pause. Come back when you have something real to say.
Ask yourself: am I doing this because I want to, or because I'm scared of what happens if I don't?
2. Not everything is up to you.
It's actually a relief that so much of this is out of your control, because that means it's not all on you. Your only job is to make what you're inspired by, post what feels true, and show up with intention in alignment with your goals for this work. The rest belongs to the world. Step back, and let it show you how good it can get.
Release attachment to any single post performing. One post is never an indication of the whole story.
Pay attention to what your audience responds to — they're telling you something. Let them lead sometimes.
Trust that the right people will find you. Your job is to be findable, not to drag everyone there yourself.
3. The journey is the dream, fully realized.
Stop waiting to arrive. The reward isn't the follower count or the moment things finally "take off." It's getting better every day. It's the clarity that comes from making something and putting it into the world. Everything you're chasing — you already have it, in how you show up to this work.
Celebrate small wins: a post you're proud of, a caption that finally said what you meant, a comment that made you feel seen.
Keep a record of your growth — go back and read old posts. You'll be surprised how far you've come.
Ask yourself regularly: who am I becoming through this work? That answer matters more than your analytics.
