No One's Going to Get It — And You Have to Be Okay With That
It happens the same way every time. After however long you've been contemplating making content, you finally decide to do it. You rip off the band-aid, make your first few posts, and at first, it's going okay. Nothing is really happening yet. There aren't a ton of views or engagement on your videos, but you're willing to be patient. If it were easy, everyone would do it, right?
But then it's been months. Three months. Six months. Heck, nine months. And still, nothing has happened yet. You've seen a little traction here and there, but nothing substantial. Nothing that warrants the effort — and frankly, the discomfort — of posting.
The worst part is, it feels like you're in a fishbowl and everyone can see what you're doing, what you're posting. Everyone can see you trying, and even flopping, publicly.
Even if you tried to keep your account private or hide it from people you know — chances are they've already found it. And if you've been bold enough to build under your personal account, people are watching.
And this is the crossroads. This is the turning point. This is what separates the people who grow their brand from the people who don’t.
Most people aren't going to get what you're doing, and you have to be okay with that. I won't even tell you that people aren't paying attention or that people don't care — because I don't think that's true. I think people notice. I think people are perceptive, and I think people make judgments. That is the nature of the beast. Honestly, it's better to just admit that than to pretend like that's not part of it.
This truth might make you uncomfortable. It might make you want to stop posting altogether. But if you're feeling the self-consciousness, the discomfort, the awareness of everyone watching — that means you're doing this the right way. Anyone who has ever reached the place you want to be has felt those exact same feelings. This is the path. You're on it.
The Real Reason Building an Audience Feels So Hard
The reason this feels so uncomfortable is because there's a gap between HOW you see yourself and what you're doing publicly.
You might still think of yourself as a normal person who is trying to become a creator. But the people who “make it” have stopped seeing themselves as someone who is trying to become a creator — and they just become one. Before the numbers ever reflect it. Before they gain more followers. Before anyone validates their content.
They talk about their content like it's real work, not a side hustle
They post even when nothing is performing
They stop saying "I'm just having fun” and start saying "this is what I do"
You're Already a Creator. Your Audience Just Hasn't Found You Yet.
Stop waiting for the people watching to decide whether you're legitimate. You already are.
The next time you feel that self-consciousness creep in, don't try to push it away. Just say to yourself — this is what it feels like to be on the path — and then post anyway.
Your real audience isn't the friends watching you right now. Your real audience is the strangers who haven't found you yet. And the only way they ever will is if you keep going.
