How to Tell Your Story on Social Media
So, you want to tell your story. And you want to tell it on social media, because you know it’s one of the most powerful ways to build a community, grow your audience, work with more clients, or simply express yourself more creatively.
But the advice “just tell your story” can feel almost too simple.
What does that actually mean?
What makes a good story great?
And how do you begin to tell yours in a way that feels natural, effective, and true to you?
That’s exactly what I’m breaking down in this post.
Storytelling is the foundation of every strong personal brand I’ve ever helped build. It’s where I start with every client and every student, no matter their background or industry. Because the truth is, storytelling isn’t just for writers or marketers — it’s for anyone who wants to create connection.
And connection is the real currency of social media.
Step 1: Know Your Story
Before you can tell your story, you have to know it. And the best way to know it, is to write it.
To start, focus on one story: the one that explains how you got to where you are today.
Try this exercise:
Sit down somewhere quiet.
Set a timer for 20 minutes.
Write your story stream of consciousness style—no editing, no censoring, no pressure to make it sound good.
Just write what comes up.
You’ll be amazed by what surfaces: forgotten memories, subtle emotions, old fears and triumphs. This kind of writing illuminates you to yourself. And when you know yourself more deeply, you tell stories more powerfully.
Step 2: Find the Arc
Once you’ve written, look for the story arc. This is the natural shape of transformation that every strong story follows.
A powerful story usually includes:
The Beginning: Where you were. What you wanted that you didn’t yet have. What life looked like before the change.
The Pivot: What forced you to act. The decision you had to make when your back was against the wall. The challenge or tension that changed everything.
The Resolution: What happened after. How things are different now—not just on the surface, but within you.
The best stories always show us what changed.
It’s not just the external shift that moves people, it’s the internal one.
Ask yourself:
What did I believe then that I no longer believe now?
What has softened, strengthened, or evolved within me?
What did this experience teach me about who I am?
When you can articulate the internal change, your story becomes universal. That’s the moment people say, “I’ve felt that too.”
Step 3: Include Tension and Vulnerability
Every great story needs tension. Without it, there’s no reason for the audience to care or continue reading.
Tension is created through honesty, through showing the parts of your journey that were uncomfortable, messy, or uncertain.
To build emotional tension:
Be honest about what was difficult before things got better.
Share what you struggled with: self-doubt, rejection, fear, failure.
Describe the stakes. What did you risk? What could you have lost?
The greater the contrast between then and now, the more memorable the story becomes. That’s what people hold onto.
Step 4: Repurpose and Repeat
Once you’ve written your story, refine it. Aim to condense it into a single page. Then practice telling it.
And tell it again. And again.
You can:
Turn it into a voiceover video.
Break it into a carousel post.
Expand it into a Substack essay.
Use snippets for captions, newsletters, and talks.
You don’t need a hundred new stories, you need one good story told a hundred different ways.
I’ve told the story from Lonely Girl hundreds of times in different forms, and it still resonates. Because good stories don’t get old, they evolve with you.
Step 5: Remember That Storytelling Is a Practice
Storytelling isn’t something you master once and move on from, it’s a lifelong practice.
Each time you tell your story, you learn more about who you are. You build courage. You connect more deeply. And ultimately, that’s what social media is for.
When you tell your story well, you don’t just build an audience. You build a community.
